Instantaneous hot water heater

Instantaneous hot water heater

Hot water systems instantaneous vs storage tank

Instantaneous hot water systems, also known as continuous hot water systems, heat water on demand. A major benefit of these systems is energy efficiency, they do not waste energy keeping water hot when it is not required. Another benefit is that you will never run out of hot water. They will likely last longer than a tank system as the cylinder tank in a water heater will eventually corrode and require replacement. A downside to instant hot water systems can be the initial cost. They may cost a little more to buy and install however the running costs may be lower in many cases.

Cylinder tank hot water systems are still the most common types in Australian homes. They come in a variety of sizes from small tank models, suitable for small units and apartments to large tanks, big enough for heavy use by a large family. Some of the better tank systems now rival instant water heaters for running efficiency.

Electric Heat Pump Hot Water Services

Heat pump hot water services are energy-efficient systems that use ambient air to heat water for homes. The units consist of a fan, an evaporator containing refrigerant, a compressor, a heat exchanger, and a water storage tank. Outside air is drawn into the unit and passed through the evaporator where its heat turns the refrigerant into a hot gas. The compressor pumps the heated gas through a valve, further increasing both its pressure and temperature. The heated water is stored in a tank ready for use.

For many households, hot water heating can cost almost 20% of their energy bill, much more for commercial buildings.

The main benefit of the heat pump hot water unit is its energy efficiency; some units may use up to 75% less electricity than a convention electric hot water service. Most systems can be controlled either by an app or the units own control panel to improve energy usage even further - lowering your power bills, reducing carbon emissions and saving energy.

Chivers Plumbing are experts in the installation of heat pump systems and can provide you with the best advice regarding the right system for your specific requirements. We have access to all of the top brands including Rheem, Thermann, and Everhot.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hot Water Services

What are the signs that my hot water service needs replacing or repair?

Depending on the age of the unit and the nature of the fault your unit may only need a service or replacement part. It is often more economical to replace older hot water heaters.

Some of the signs that your water heater needs attention:

  • You have no hot water
  • Water is leaking from the unit
  • The water is rusty or contains sediment
  • The pilot light goes out often
  • Water pressure is inconsistent
  • The unit is making banging or rumbling sounds
Which type of hot water heater should I get?

That will depend on your personal circumstances and requirements. Factors to consider when making such a decision include the amount of hot water you need each day, the size of your property and the type of services available at your property.

Another point to consider is the initial investment cost versus the running cost over time.

Chivers Plumbing can provide you with expert advise on all available types of hot water service installation and help you make the best choice.

How much does it cost to install a hot water system?

If you are replacing the unit with a similar type, in the same location the installation cost will be relatively low. It will be more expensive if the new unit is to be moved to a different location, from an indoor unit to external for example. It will be more expensive again if you wish to change energy source, from say gas to electric or visa versa.

Chivers Plumbing will be happy to help you find the best solution for your needs and provide you with a highly competitive, fixed price quotation for all work required.

Are instantaneous water heaters more efficient than storage tank systems?

In many cases they can be significantly more efficient but it is highly dependent on your daily usage requirements.

If you use fewer than 155 litres of hot water per day, a tankless system may be up to 35% more energy efficient than a hot water storage tank. On the other hand, if your daily use is greater than 350 litres you may not notice a worthwhile improvement in efficiency.
